Film Poster Analysis

The film poster for 'Sinister' is a very interesting and clever poster. It uses a great range of techniques in order to intrigue the audience and sell the film. The design is quite basic but uses very clever and detailed graphical effects.
The colour scheme within the poster is very well put together as it is predominantly white. This portrays a sense of innocence due to the connotations of the colour white which include; purity, virginity and vulnerability. All of these connotations heighten the horror aspect as it increases the fear factor due to the innocence and vulnerability. The white also heightens the contrast with red which really stands out against the white background. It also acts as a hook. Not only is blood shocking thing to see and would easily draw attention to itself from the audience but the stand out effect it has against the background increases the stand out effect.
The photo-effect the designers have used on the blood is very clever as the dripping effect creates a face and is presumingly the 'bad/horror' character of this film. Yet it doesn't perfectly show what or who it is, which makes the audience want to find out who or what it is. This 'preview' effect acts as a hook to make the audience want to watch the film.

Very little text is used, but what is is used to good effect. The film title has a nice shadow and blood drop effect to create a mysterious and dangerous theme which gives an impression of the film to the audience. Other than the title, the only other main text (excluding producers other films) is the sell line which is ' once you see him, nothing can save you'. Again, this acts as a hook as it gives little away of the story but is enough to intrigue the audience.

I think the the sinister film poster is very well made and very effective. The devises it uses is more than effective in intriguing an audience. I have never seen the film but the poster has convinced me to watch it as I want the questions raised by the poster answered.
